Environmental Health Program

The primary function of environmental health refers to the protection against environmental factors that may adversely impact human health or the ecological balances essential to long-term human health and environmental quality, whether in the natural or human made environment. These factors include but are not limited to air, food and water contaminants, radiation, toxic chemicals, wastes, disease vectors, safety hazards and other habitat alterations. Other activities include to providing the continuation of core mandatory programs, consisting but not limited to air quality evaluations, water monitoring, sewage disposal, food service, institutional inspections and housing inspections. Assistance is also provided to Drinking Water Quality Monitors on an ongoing basis including housing inspections and air quality evaluations. The Keewatin Tribal Council (KTC) Environmental Health Officer (EHO) by way of community visits conducts inspections and provides the necessary reports and recommendations to the community contacts. The activities of the program are ongoing to include drinking water safety within the communities, assisting technical services and communities with public works projects that have an impact on the public health of the community members and cyclical inspections by community. Nursing Station staff are re-trained in Transportation of Dangerous Goods on a ongoing basis as deemed within their certificate expire time lines. Food-safe handling courses are offered to the KTC communities and this is offered also to anyone who works with food in the KTC communities. Workshops are organized in conjunction with Health Canada for the Community Based Drinking Water Quality Monitors.
