Keewatin Tribal Council

Youth Volunteerism & Community Impact Program

Funded in part by the Canada Service Corps

The KTC Youth Volunteerism & Community Impact Program is a youth-led initiative designed to empower young people across Keewatin Tribal Council (KTC) communities to take an active role in strengthening their Nations. Through meaningful volunteer opportunities, youth develop leadership skills, build confidence, and contribute to real, visible change within their communities.

This program supports youth ages 12-30 in completing structured volunteer placements, with a focus on community-driven priorities. Participants work toward achieving 120 hours of service while gaining hands-on experience in areas such as cultural revitalization, community events, food security initiatives, youth mentorship, and local improvement projects.

Rooted in Indigenous values and guided by community leadership, the program emphasizes the importance of giving back, learning from Elders, and building strong, respectful relationships. Youth are supported by local coordinators and provided with the tools, training, and resources needed to succeed.

Program activities include:

  • Land-based learning and cultural workshops with Elders and knowledge keepers
  • Organizing and supporting community festivals and events
  • Developing youth-led newsletters and media initiatives
  • Leading community clean-ups and improvement projects
  • Supporting local food banks and food security efforts
  • Assisting with youth programming and peer mentorship

The KTC Youth Volunteerism Program is more than volunteer hours, It is about building future leaders, strengthening identity, and creating a lasting impact. By investing in youth today, we are helping to shape stronger, healthier communities for generations to come.
